From the Founder — Vilate Ssempala

As a homeschool mom of seven, I’ve always looked for ways to enrich the learning experience for my children. Over time, I began hiring passionate teachers to come into our home and teach subjects in ways I couldn’t — and I loved watching my kids connect with mentors who brought new perspectives, depth, and experiences into their lives.

Each teacher offered something unique, and it was beautiful to see how those connections helped shape my children in powerful ways. I cherished being in control of their education — keeping them close, grounded in our values, and surrounded by family — while still introducing them to wise and capable mentors who inspired them.

Eventually, the idea came to invite other students to join us — to make learning more social and to build a small community around shared educational values. That’s how Asante Academy of Utah was born.

The word “Asante” means thank you in Swahili — a language spoken by my husband and one that is often used in our home. It felt like the perfect name for a school rooted in gratitude: gratitude for the freedom to homeschool, for the ability to shape our children’s education intentionally, and for the blessing of mentors who are deeply invested in our children’s lives.

We hope you feel that same sense of joy, empowerment, and connection as you begin your journey with us.

All the best to you and yours — and Asante!
